UTEA Summer Block Party unites community

On Aug. 15, the Union Township Education Association (UTEA) sponsored a community block party at Rabkin Park in Union Township. The event was a huge success, with hundreds of people from the community coming together to enjoy food, music, games and other family activities.

UTEA President Ann-Margaret Shannon was joined by community leaders, school administrators and NJEA President Sean M. Spiller. Together, with the UTEA members, they celebrated the strength and unity of the Union Township community.

“The Union Township Education Association is not just about homework,” Shannon said. “We are also about celebrating the partnership we share with our schools and all of Union Township.”

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Gerry Benequista shared a similar sentiment about the school district’s partnership with the UTEA.

“Anyone who is involved in the school system knows how important a partnership is for the success of our students,” Benequista said. If it wasn’t for our partnership with UTEA we wouldn’t be as successful as we are.

The atmosphere at Rabkin Park was festive and lively. Children ran around and played games with painted faces and balloon animals while their parents enjoyed delicious food from local vendors. The music was upbeat and energetic. The bounce house and slides were a big hit with the children.

The community block party was not just about having fun, however. It was also an opportunity for community organizations to showcase their work and connect with residents. The police and fire departments had set up booths where they shared information about safety and emergency preparedness. The Union Public Library, Union Recreation Department and the YMCA promoted their programs and services for children and families. The township’s Parent Teacher Organizations and the Special Education Parent Advisory Group were also there to connect with parents about the upcoming school year.

Optical Academy was also present at the block party where families could get immediate eye exams and order prescription glasses on-site.

Overall, the community UTEA-sponsored block party sponsored by the UTEA was a great success. It brought together the families and community officials to celebrate their community and have a good time. Events like this are important for building strong bonds between residents, school and community fostering a sense of partnership for the students in Union Township.

NJEA president Sean Spiller summed up the event’s success best.

“It’s great to see everyone from the community celebrating the partnership of success that we see in Union Township—this is what it’s all about,” Spiller said. “This is why we have the best schools in the nation.”
