Two NJ public schools honored in Project Citizen National Showcase

NJEA is proud to join Project Citizen in highlighting the work of young change-makers across the country. This year, two New Jersey public schools have been recognized by Project Citizen for their innovative public policy projects. Those schools are:

ADA Compliance in Public Parks
Ridgefield Park Jr./Sr. High School
Ridgefield Park, NJ

Hygiene Matters
East Orange STEM Academy High School
East Orange, NJ

According to Project Citizen, “We are thrilled to announce the results of this year’s Project Citizen National Showcase! This year’s submissions demonstrated innovation, ingenuity, and inspiration. Each project was a testament to the power of youth voices to shape our society for the better. From environmental conservation to mental health to social justice, these passionate young visionaries have tackled some of the most pressing issues of our time.”

Project Citizen is a civic education program for middle, secondary, and post-secondary students, as well as youth and adult groups. Its practical, first-hand approach promotes student interest and the ability to participate competently in state, local, and federal government.

The curriculum actively engages people in the process of monitoring and influencing public policy. Participants work as a group to identify and study a problem in their community. Their final product is a portfolio that may be presented to other classes, groups, community organizations, or policymakers.
