2019 Elizabeth Allen Scholarship Recipient: Simon Levien

Simon Levien

Simon Levien is a senior at Harvard University majoring in history, where his senior thesis will focus on early interracial civil rights organizing efforts in Mississippi during the mid-20th century. Levien travel to Europe during his spring semester to study art history in Paris and Copenhagen. Levien’s career aspirations are in the field of journalism. His research regarding an on-campus issue that was covered up by administration won him the national prize in investigative reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists. Levien was thrilled to receive an internship with the politics desk of the Wall Street Journal, reporting from their D.C. bureau; his job entailed interviewing lawmakers and writing stories about the latest happenings in Congress.

2020 Elizabeth Allen Scholarship Recipient: Angelica Chin

Angelica Chin

Angelica Chin, a senior at MIT, is majoring in computer science and economics with a secondary major in business analytics. In the summer of 2022, Chin’s internship was in software development. She immersed herself in her junior year courses, such as macroeconomics, giving her an eye–opening view of the global economy. A minor in music allows her to tap into her creative side and enables her to participate in the MIT Symphony and Wind Ensemble. Chin’s career goals are more solidified now, and she is looking forward to working as a software developer after graduation, possibly in the finance world.

2021 Elizabeth Allen Scholarship Recipient: Shreya Shivakumar

Shreya Shivakumar

A junior at Barnard College in Columbia University, Shreya Shivakumar is majoring in political science. Her sophomore year included courses in constitutional, international and environmental law. She interned in the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, where she gained experiences and insight into the role of federal prosecutors in the justice system. On campus, Shivakumar serves as an executive editor of the Columbia University Undergraduate Law Review, and as curriculum director of the Athena Mock Trial Club. Still actively involved as president of her non–profit, “Nourishing America,” Shivakumar hopes to expand access to organic and healthy foods to families in need. She has also interned in the pro bono department of a law firm and will work in Access Barnard’s office. Her next step is to sit for LSATs and prepare to enter law school after graduation.

2022 Elizabeth Allen Scholarship Recipient: Charles Devine

Charles Devine

Charles Devine is a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame majoring in computer and informational science, with a minor in corporate business ethics. Devine used his scholarship award towards the purchase of an Apple computer for his coursework. He was fortunate to study abroad last summer in Italy. Due to his outstanding academic achievements, he was named a Brennan Family Scholar at Notre Dame. Devine competed and earned a spot on the prestigious Student International Business Council as a freshman, a rare feat. As part of his work on this council, Devine presented a project at Amazon headquarters in Seattle.

2020 Isabelle M. Hickman Scholarship Recipient: DeAisha Johnson

DeAisha Johnson

A senior at Princeton University, DeAisha Johnson took on the role as a residential college advisor at the university. Johnson is a first generation low–income student majoring in public policy. This past summer, Johnson received an offer to work at Black Rockin NYC as a summer intern. She also received a merit award for her contributions to her community. She is looking forward to graduation.

2021 Isabelle M. Hickman Scholarship Recipient: Mary Kate Merenich

Mary Kate Merenich

Mary Kate Merenich, a junior at Duke University, is majoring in neurosciences, with a minor in psychology. Merenich served on the board of NeuroCare, an organization at Duke dedicated to neuroscience education and mental health support. Her sophomore year was spent as a research assistant for a physician who studies infant language acquisition. Merenich’s ambition is to have a career as a full-time neuroscientist working in a laboratory. Her junior year studies will include research in music and memory.

2022 Isabelle M. Hickman Scholarship Recipient: Gabriella Bravo

Gabriella Bravo

Gabriella Bravo is a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in health and societies with a global health concentration. Bravo described her first year as a transformative experience as rigorous coursework and moving away from home were challenges initially for her. Bravo marvels at the multitude of experiences and perspectives that campus life has exposed her to at U of P. She was fortunate to find a group of first–generation Latina students like herself on campus. Bravo views her time in college as a pivotal chapter in her life.
