Scam alert: protect your phone

We are receiving reports of unwanted text messages to NJEA members that are inflammatory and may also be phishing scams. The messages come from the Sunlight Policy Center, a right-wing group with a long history of anti-NJEA and anti-union rhetoric. This attack against us and our president is coming because they know we are the most powerful group in New Jersey standing in the way of Project 2025.

If you receive an unauthorized or suspicious text message from this group, please don’t respond or click on any links, as these can lead to harmful websites or potentially install malicious software on your device. Instead, take these important steps:

  1. Forward the message to your wireless carrier by texting it to 7726 (SPAM), a free number for reporting spam texts.
  2. Forward the message scamreports@njea.org so we can track these incidents and take appropriate action. A screenshot is sufficient.
  3. Report the message to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov
  4. You may also block the number, but do so only after saving a screenshot and sending it to the email address in #2, above.

To better protect your phone in the future, you can read and share this article from the FTC on how to recognize and report spam text messages.
