The NJEA Women in Education Committee and their subcommittee—Lactation Rights Task Force, would like to bring to your attention some relevant legislative action happening nationally. The committee asks that you review the two bills being introduced and to push our legislators to support these bills, by following the links to the National Education Association Take Action site.
- The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which would create stronger federal protections for pregnant workers. The NEA has an action tool available, here.
- The Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers (PUMP) Act, which has already been positively received in Senate and Congress, provides stronger federal protections that would specifically help teachers and nurses. Here’s information and an action toolfrom USBC
The NJEA Women in Education Committee has created a subcommittee, called the Lactation Rights Task Force, which is comprised of NJEA members, NJEA WIE Committee members, and representatives from New Jersey Breastfeeding Coalition (NJBC), Montclair State University, Lactation Ally, Nurture NJ, and the Office of the First Lady-State of New Jersey. The task force’s work on this project is in conjunction with programs happening at the state level, under the direction of New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy, as outlined in the Nurture NJ Maternal and Infant Health Strategic Plan.
