New Jersey has some of the strongest protections for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals in the country, and that extends to our students and school staff. Despite the policy changes being implemented by the Trump administration, New Jersey’s laws and mandates continue to protect our residents and limit local action.
While the most egregious attacks on individual rights have focused on transgender students and athletes, the rescission of inclusion policies at the federal level are having an impact on the LGBTQIA+ community at large. In these difficult times, we must act within our communities and throughout our state to protect the rights of our students and staff.
As these attacks continue, we encourage you to:

-
Know your rights by understanding the NJ Law Against Discrimination, which also protects the rights of your students.
-
Check your school district board policies for policies that might impact LGBTQIA+ students or staff.
-
Visit NEA’s Action Center for many incredible resources to support you and your students.
