Retirees and their dependents enrolled in medical coverage through the School Employees’ Health Benefit Program (SEHBP) must enroll in Medicare Parts A and B once eligible. There is no option to waive Medicare for a retiree or a dependent who is Medicare eligible.
Retired members with 25 years of eligible service in New Jersey (or eligible purchased time) who retire from a benefits-eligible position qualify for post-retirement medical and coverage for themselves and qualifying dependents. Health benefits coverage is provided through the state’s School Employees’ Health Benefits Program.
