We grieve today with the family and loved ones of the late Rep. Donald Payne, Jr.
Congressman Payne was a great champion of the constituents he represented and of working people everywhere. As a former union member himself, he understood that all work has dignity. He also understood the challenges faced by working families in this economy and used his power in Congress to advance causes that he believed would make New Jersey and America a better and more just place for everyone. That was a continuation of the work he did in Newark and Essex County before following his father to Washington, DC.
While he is gone far too soon, his legacy will live on and he will be remembered for his kindness, his generous spirit and his humble approach to public service even as he achieved high office.
We will miss him.
