In Gloucester County, Logan Township educator Kara Damminger was awarded a $900 grant from the Hipp Foundation to improve the working vocabulary of middle school students.
Using Vocabulary.com, a personalized, game-like experience, students will play to gain word knowledge and understanding until a word is mastered. Students earn points, badges, and spots on a leadership board in competition with other students in the school, state, and nationally. The competitive format entices students to not only play during designated school time, but to continue use outside of the classroom with access via computer, mobile device, or tablet.
Students will be able to see their progress, including the words with which they struggle, and their confidence will grow as they master more words through playing the game. Nationally, schools compete in the Vocabulary Bowl, which awards a banner to the school with the leading score each month.
The subscription cost for Vocabulary.com will be supported by the Hipp grant for the first year with potential for future support from the school district if the program successfully demonstrates student growth, as well as attracting community support to fund the subscription in the future.
