Rutgers - The State University of New JerseyEducators can take advantage of Rutgers’ highly-rated Summer Advanced Placement Institute offered on the New Brunswick Campus in three sessions running from July 8 through August 15, 2013. The program, offered in partnership with the College Board, is open to beginning and experienced AP teachers.

The sixth annual summer program includes 12, week-long intensive seminars that focus on specific pedagogical issues in the AP classroom. Each program fulfills 30 hours of professional development requirements for New Jersey teachers. Educators also may complete a seminar for three nondegree graduate credits through the Rutgers-New Brunswick Summer Session.

This year, the Summer AP Institute has added courses in AP chemistry and calculus. The program also will address the new exams being introduced in chemistry and Spanish language and culture, which will be administered in 2014. This will be the first opportunity for educators to learn about changes to the exams.

The Summer Session dates and programs are:

  • July 8 through July 11: U.S. history, world history, economics, and chemistry
  • July 15 through July 18: environmental science, psychology, and calculus
  • August 12 through August 15: music theory, French, Spanish, European history, and studio art

Workshops will cover curriculum framework, changes to the courses, understanding the exams, course planning and pacing, instructional design, and developing a syllabus.

Courses are conducted by experienced AP instructors who have been recommended by the College Board. A list of faculty members can be found online at apinstitute.rutgers.edu.

Noncredit registration can be  completed online. Tuition is $900 if received before June 1. This cost includes lunches, workshop materials, and all instruction. After June 1, noncredit tuition is $1,025. Teachers from other states are also eligible to register.
