Requires public school buildings to be equipped with an emergency light and panic alarm.
NJEA supports A-191 (Caputo, Diegnan, Spencer, Tucker, Quijano, Vainieri Huttle, Sumter, McKnight). This bill requires that elementary and secondary public school buildings be equipped with an emergency light and panic alarm for use in a school security emergency. The panic alarm will not be audible within the school, similar to systems used by banks. The alarm will be directly linked to law enforcement authorities who are required to respond.
NJEA supports enhancing school security and we believe all schools should be required to have this very common sense security measure in place. Schools across the state are improving their security features in many different ways which suit that individual school district. Some are installing separate waiting areas before a person can enter, others are installing stronger doors---all schools however, should have a silent panic alarm that goes directly to the nearest police station. Hitting a panic alarm in an emergency situation can save valuable minutes and even seconds which could ultimately save lives.
Funding for the alarms will come from the proceeds of bonds issued by the SDA and will not be borne by the local school district.
