NJEA Back to School FundA run and walk to raise funds for the NJEA Hurricane Sandy Back to School Fund will launch this year’s annual Tri-State Health and Wellness Fair. The “Restore the Shore” run/walk is sponsored by Natural Awakenings of Central New Jersey and Health Ventures Plus and will take place rain or shine on Sunday, April 28 on the grounds surrounding Hunterdon Hills Playhouse in Hampton, N.J.

Participants may choose a 5K or 10K route or a one-mile walk around a beautiful lake on the campus of Hunterdon Hills Playhouse. The run and walk begin at 10 a.m.

“As a former physical education teacher, I wanted to do a fundraiser that would benefit the NJEA fund,” said run organizer Lori Tomenchok, who now works with Health Ventures.

Runners and walkers enjoy a complimentary breakfast buffet and an awards ceremony after they cross the finish line.

Trophies will be awarded to the top male and female finishers, and medals will be given to the top three male and female finishers in six age categories: 18 and under; 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and over.

All proceeds from the run and walk will benefit the NJEA Hurricane Sandy Back to School Fund. Entry fees for the 5K race and 1 mile fun run/walk are $25 if received prior by April 10 and $30 after that date up to the day of the race. The 10K race fee is $35 if received by April 10 and $40 after that date up to the day of the race.

Make a day of it

After you’ve had your fill of breakfast, there’s no need to race out of the parking lot. The Tri-State Health and Wellness Fair has activities for the whole family. You’ll find vendors with information on nutrition, general health, and your overall sense of well-being.

Children and adults will enjoy fun activities on the beautiful grounds surrounding the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse. See this flier for more information.

Soup for you!

The day also includes the Healthy Soup Cook-Off. You bring the ingredients and Healthy Ventures will supply the cook stations. A panel of judges including chefs and nutrition experts will select winners based on nutritional value, taste, creativity, and presentation.

Following the judging, the soup will be sold with proceeds going to another relief fund: The Foundation to Save the Jersey Shore. You can learn more about that fund at

Prior to April 28, young people aged 20 and under can enter the Soups on Recipe Contest. Entries must be received by April 1, with winners announced at the fair. For details write or call Lori Tomenchock at or 908-310-5945.
